The Department of Crop Management (Agricultural Microbiology), Mother Terasa College of Agriculture, has initiated Azolla cultivation as part of its sustainable agricultural practices and biofertilizer research program.
Azolla, an aquatic fern known for its symbiotic association with the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena azollae, serves as an eco-friendly alternative to chemical fertilizers. The cultivation aims to promote organic farming and enhance soil fertility while reducing input costs for farmers.
The Azolla units were established using earthen pits lined with polythene sheets and maintained with optimal nutrient and water conditions. Regular monitoring ensures healthy growth and biomass yield.
The harvested Azolla will be utilized for:
This initiative contributes to the broader goal of promoting sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture through cost-effective natural inputs.
